Therapy for Teens

The teenage years can be challenging.

Teenagers are in a period of life that involves many transitions and challenges; and, in many cases, the parents just don’t understand.

Teenagers can display moodiness (sadness, happiness, depression), experience stress with issues in school, act up in school, feel depressed from failing to fit in with a favorite group, and have low self-esteem.

Unfortunately, parents are sometimes at the end of their rope in terms of knowing what to do.

This is when therapy can help.

The problem is not always parenting.

Parents of teenagers are often defensive about kids being in counseling. Naturally there is some curiosity about the problem.

“WHAT DOES THIS MEAN ABOUT OUR PARENTING!?”

Relax, it’s probably not about your parenting.

Counselors who work with teenagers are superheroes.

The hard part is working with parents of teenagers.

Recommendations may include a combination of individual, group, and/or family therapy.

Regardless, the most important aspect is connecting with the counselor.

It takes a certain type of person to work with teens.

Counselors must be kind of crazy, too.

All our clinicians were teenagers once, many of whom used counseling to create their own lives!

Now we are making mental health cool… again.

Counseling is more common than ever.

Clients are usually surprised to learn how many of their friends are already in counseling.

When teen counseling is done right, it does not feel like therapy.

It’s an honest, confidential conversation with a therapist (who is an adult) that is NOT your parent.
