Merissa Thompson, LPC

About my approach (style) to therapy…

I take a person centered approach to therapy and tailor my techniques based on who I am working with and what we are working on. I am always learning new techniques so that I can better support my clients in more aspects of their life. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, Strength Based, and other techniques. This allows us to create a therapeutic space that best supports your needs.

About my background and training…

I graduated with a Bachelors in Psychology from Southern Connecticut State University and after working in jobs that had nothing to do with my degree, I returned there to complete my Masters and Sixth Year Certificate in School Psychology. While working as a School Psychologist, I obtained my Licensed Professional Counselor certificate and started a private practice. This is my tenth year working in the school system and going on my second year as an LPC. I have worked with a diverse population during this time with a focus on LGBTQIA+ issues. I have developed training for teachers to help them better understand the community and to provide education on how to support students who identify in this population.

About my work (ideal clients)…

During my time as a school psychologist, I have worked with students of all ages, but my ideal client(s) are adolescents and older that are looking to better understand themselves. I enjoy working with people who are motivated to improve their lives and learn skills that will allow them to thrive.

About me (personal interests)…

I knew from an early age that I wanted to help people, the path to here from there has been a long, but fruitful one. I intimately understand how difficult life can be and know that sometimes we need a helping hand to get through the hard times. I love being able to be a part of someone’s journey to their best self.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my partner, three dogs, and two cats in central CT. We camp, go for wandering rides on our motorcycle, kayak, and laugh as much as possible. I’m also an avid reader, love music, and going to concerts.
